Renowned Italian Artist Presents First-of-its-kind Fresco-painting Workshop in Singapore

Italian Artist Peppe Candeloro will share his passion and techniques at ACM Empress Place in conjunction with the Journey of Faith exhibition

[7 September 2005] The Asian Civilisations Museum brings the art of fresco painting (artworks incorporated into ceilings and walls) to Singapore for the very first time. Italian artist Peppe Candeloro is specially flown in to share rare insights and techniques on the art and science of fresco painting. Visitors can marvel at magnificent frescoes from the Christian era in the special gallery, and try their hand at fresco-painting in the month of September 2005.

Organised in conjunction with the Vatican blockbuster exhibition “Journey of Faith”, the two-day hands-on workshops and talk teaches participants about the modern uses of this ancient art to adorn walls and ceilings. Participants will also gain a deeper appreciation of how Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508-12) and Raphael’s School of Athens in the Vatican (1510-11) were created.

Candeloro has worked on a series of seminars on frescoes with Gianluigi Colalucci, the Chief Restorer of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Since 1978 he has dedicated himself to painting frescoes, his preferred medium of expression. To date, he has painted more than 900 square metres of walls and panels. His biggest realization is the “Discorso della Montagna” (The Speech of the Mountain) which spans over 80 square metres in St. Peter’s Church, Lanciano, Italy.

The two-day fresco workshops are scheduled on 10 to 11 September and 14 to 16 September 2005, from 10am to 5pm.

Due to the overwhelming response to the workshops, an additional demonstration lecture has been specially organised. Titled “In conversation with Peppe Candeloro: "The Making of a Fresco”, the talk will happen from 7 pm to 9 pm on 23 September 2005 at ACM, Empress Place’s Ngee Ann Auditorium. Candeloro will speak on the development of the fresco technique from prehistoric times to the present, as well as its impact on the contemporary art scene. The speaker will also share with the audience a video documentation of himself as the artist at work, illustrating the step-by-step process of making of a fresco. Participants can look forward to an interesting tactile experience as they will be invited to touch pieces of the artists’ work.
